Where does the text reading happen?

Text reading is handled by an online text-recognition service on both desktop and mobile. The document image is sent to it, the text is read, and the image is then deleted, not stored. On the free text-recognition tier the processing servers are currently located overseas (US). An internet connection is required to read documents. All analysis after the text is read stays on your own device.

What does it cost and are there per-page fees?

One flat monthly price with unlimited documents and unlimited pages, no credits, no per-page fees and no overage charges. Android Mobile is $39.99/mo, Windows Desktop is $59.99/mo, and the Desktop plus Mobile bundle is $79.99/mo, all AUD incl. GST.

What is AI Page Scanner on the mobile app?

AI Page Scanner lets you draw your field zones over a page once, then remembers that layout. Every photo you take afterwards of the same page type drops the saved zones straight back on automatically — you just nudge any box that drifted and extract, and it gets more accurate with every correction. You can add product rows with description, price or rate, and Qty or Hours in the review modal. Like Document Mode, an AI Page Scan costs just one page from your allowance.

Can mobile Receipt Mode capture line items?

Yes. Beyond the header fields (store, date, total), you can add a line-item table zone that captures each product on the receipt. Every product saves as its own row sharing the same scan number, date, store and total — so you can filter by product, sum by category, and pivot by month in Excel.

Is Balaur Data Extractor cloud-based or local?

Balaur is local-first: your extracted data, analysis, charts and the SQLite database all stay on your own device and are never stored on our servers. Two things do use the internet — signing in to verify your subscription (via Cloudflare and Paddle), and reading text from documents. When a document is read, its image is sent to an online text-recognition service on overseas (currently US-based) servers, processed, and then deleted; it isn't stored or archived. An internet connection is therefore required to sign in and to read documents.

Is my data ever uploaded to the cloud?

Your documents are never stored on Balaur's servers. Reading text from a photo uses an online text-recognition service, so an internet connection is required and the image is sent to that service to be read — but it is processed and then deleted, not kept or archived. On the free text-recognition tier this processing happens on overseas (currently US-based) servers. Everything after the text is read — cleaning, charts, statistics and the local SQLite database — runs on your own computer. Mobile-to-desktop transfer goes directly between your devices over your own Wi-Fi network, not through a server we own.

Does it need an internet connection?

Yes. Both the desktop and mobile apps need an internet connection to work. They sign in and verify your licence online (via Cloudflare and Paddle), and reading text from documents uses an online text-recognition service. If your internet, the licence service, or the text-recognition service is temporarily unavailable, sign-in or text reading may be interrupted until the connection is restored — this is the trade-off that lets us offer unlimited documents with no per-page fees. Once your data is extracted, all the analysis, charting and database work runs on your own machine. Mobile-to-desktop CSV transfer also needs both devices on the same Wi-Fi network.

Where does the actual text reading happen?

Text reading is handled by an online text-recognition service. Your document image is sent to it, the text is read, and the image is then deleted — the service does not store or archive your documents. This applies to both the desktop and mobile apps. On the free text-recognition tier the processing servers are currently located overseas (US). Because text recognition is online, an internet connection is required to read documents. What does it cost — are there per-page or per-document fees?

One flat monthly price, with unlimited documents and unlimited pages — no credits, no per-page fees, no overage charges. Android Mobile is $39.99/mo, Windows Desktop is $59.99/mo, and the Desktop + Mobile bundle is $79.99/mo (all AUD, incl. GST).

Which accounting software can I export to?

The desktop app exports to 40+ purpose-built accounting formats including MYOB, Xero, QuickBooks, HubDoc, Reckon, Sage, FreshBooks, Wave, Zoho and NetSuite — plus QuickBooks Desktop IIF and a plain CSV that imports into virtually anything. Balaur feeds your accounting software; it doesn't replace it.

What file types and documents can it handle?

Photos and scans of receipts and invoices, PDFs, and on-screen captures of web pages and portals. In Data Tools you can also import any existing Excel or CSV to clean, reshape, chart or run statistics on — even if it never touched the extraction side.

Is this just a receipt scanner, or can it analyse data too?

It's a full data workbench. Beyond extraction you get 35+ cleanup and reshaping tools, a built-in SQLite database with a read-only SQL query editor, 11 statistical tests with plain-English verdicts, and a Chart Builder with 25+ chart types including scatter regression, heatmaps, waterfall and Sankey (exportable as a chart-plus-data-table PDF) — all built in, no add-ons or extra subscriptions.

What happens to my data if I cancel?

Your data already lives on your computer — in your Excel files, CSVs and local database — so it stays with you regardless of your subscription status. Balaur reads and writes ordinary files on your machine; cancelling simply ends access to the app, not your data.

What platforms does it run on?

The full desktop engine runs on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). The mobile capture app runs on Android today, with an iOS version in review with Apple. The desktop and mobile apps pair over Wi-Fi so you can capture on a phone and finish on your PC.

Do I need to know SQL or statistics to use it?

No. Everything is point-and-click — the SQL editor and statistical tests are there for power users, but everyone else can build calculated columns, charts and totals without writing a line of code. The statistical tests return a plain-English verdict, not just raw numbers.
